I feel like the luckiest person in the world. They say "You're the average of the five people you spend the most time with". I am fortunate enough to have many incredible people in my life. It all starts with my family. I would not be able to travel if it wasn't for Charmaine and her support, she really holds down the fort and makes sure that the girls are all taken care of.
April 15th started the month off. Matthew Lopez had an amazing performance at RFA 37, he ended up getting the first round submission to strikes. One of the neatest things about this weekend was that Dana White was there to film "looking for a fight". The trip to South Dakota was amazing and successful.
Next up was Carla Esparza UFC 197 April 23 in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand. I was fortunate enough to join Carla for a short camp of three weeks to fight a very tough opponent Juliana Lima. Carla did an amazing job coming off a 13 month lay off and dominated all three rounds.
I learned a few things about Carla during this camp. 1. If she says she's going to do something she does it. 2. Carla is a true professional in every way. The weight cut was a non issue and staying motivated to train was also a non issue. 3. Carla is kind and courteous to friends and coaches.
Immediately following the fight I was off to McCarran airport to fly to Los Angeles for the Eddie Bravo Invitational. This was an amazing event with many twist and turns. Gordon Ryan won with a gutsy performance. I think that Grace stole the show. She did an amazing job getting the submission victory. Dead Orchard.
I didn't get to see him for long, but anytime you get to spend with Jean Jacques is amazing. I am very lucky to have him in my life.
April 25th Downtown Los Angeles Combate Americas and Kyra Batara, Kyra is a unique person, not only is she one of my fighters but she is like a daughter to me. I've never had a fighter that I connected to quite like Kyra. Teaching and coaching her is a pure joy, when she is fighting, she executes the game plan to the T, she also is always paying attention in to my coaching during the fight. It is not uncommon for us to have a conversation mid fight.
I'm so proud of Kyra I can't wait to watch her future play out, she is the best 105er in the world and she is only 21.
Not ready to go home yet, I headed to Costa Mesa to have some meetings and teach a few classes. I feel that at this stage in my life the quote at the top is 100% accurate. I truly am the average of the people I keep close. I feel lucky and humbled that so many great people have allowed me into their lives.
